Plan a clear funeral or memorial order of service with adaptable templates for traditional, religious, and celebration-of-life gatherings.
An order of service is both a roadmap for guests and a working plan for the people leading the gathering. It does not need to record every movement. It should name the moments that help guests follow along: music, welcome, readings, tributes, reflection, and closing.
Customs vary across faiths, cultures, venues, and families. Confirm the sequence with your officiant or service leader before printing, especially when a liturgy has required language or placement.
A flexible memorial service order
This sequence works because it welcomes people, establishes the tone, tells the story of the life, creates room for response, and closes with clear direction. A 45- to 60-minute service often includes two readings, two or three tributes, and one musical reflection.

Plan timing before you finalize the program
Readings usually take two to four minutes. Prepared tributes often take five to seven. Music can take three to five minutes per selection, while a photo montage may run six to ten. Add transition time, particularly if speakers approach from the audience.
Ask every speaker to send their final title and preferred name by a firm deadline. If the order changes after printing, the service leader can announce the adjustment; the gathering does not need to pause while programs are corrected.
How to format the printed order
- Use the heading “Order of Service” or “Celebration of Life.”
- List items in sequence with short, parallel labels.
- Add participant names only after spelling and roles are confirmed.
- Print full song lyrics or readings only when permission and space allow.
- Keep production notes, cues, and private timing instructions on a separate leader copy.
